We debate wether or not to make a run for it or press on into the cave, in the end the hobgoblins about to emerge from the cave force our hand, better a close fight in the tunnels, than being picked off by archers in the open.
After defeating the hobgoblins and taking the barricade we rest for 10 minutes while I heal people, and then press on. The goblins were waiting for an opportunity to attack us from both sides along one of the tunnels, but we dispatched them with ease.
After dealing with the goblin’s rats, we find an area of the cave system which was better worked than the rest and newer, only a few months old, and slightly taller than the rest. Dorin thinks this must be where the hobgoblins live, and indeed we find there sleeping quarters, and the commanders room. Fortunately the hobgoblins with him go down easily, and we dispatch the commander quickly despite the odd wound from his greatsword.
The papers in the commanders desk are written in goblin and we cannot read them, however there are lists of names, including members of the Evers gang with amounts next to them and a list of the town councillors and other town worthies with their addresses. Copies of minuites of the town council meetings going back a few months including the one we went to. There is also a map of Rowen Cove showing all the key locations, and what appear to be the town watch and town guard patrol patterns, with the numbers of guards and watch.
It is clear that they have received information from within the town, and we decide to ask Carric as an outsider to translate the documents for us rather than risk alerting a traitor.
The Commander has a key to his room and one to a chest which contains gold, gems and a potion, his armor is clearly of fine manufacture and Thomas tells us it is crafted from mithral, a rare metal much prized by the dwarfs.
