Abermar and Fintan tell of their mornings investigation. They talked to the accused Balthar Bexley and did not get a very favourable impression of him, however they are sure of his innocence. He told them that he spent most of the evening in the Herring, leaving to meet Jenny Bell around 10 O’clock, consummating their tryst in a nearby abandoned house, he says he was with her for about 15 minutes before returning to the Herring, he did not report anything unusual in her demeanour. After another drink he left. (Enquiries in the Herring confirmed part of Bexley’s tale, they did not see any blood on him, but could not confirm how long he had been gone or if he had changed his clothes).
Talking to Calum Havers did not amount to much, he is convinced he has his man and is not making any more enquiries. He told them that the body was seen by Caleb Ingolbury, the apothecary, who can attest to its state.
A search of Bexley’s residence revealed nothing but a dissolute lifestyle, they found a dagger in a draw, however it was rusty and did not appear to have been used recently. No bloody clothing or incriminating evidence presented itself.
Shallyn suggested that we could look at the earlier incidents to see if Bexley has an alibi for those.
It was proposed that later that afternoon, enquires could be made at the temple to see if there could be some supernatural explanation for the murder.
Thomas told us of his meetings that morning with the town councillors overall he seems to have made a good impression.
After hearing the concerns of the councillors, clearly the orc’s are high on the list of their concerns. Fintan said that the orcs attacked last month on the 12th Hollmont, numbers were sketchy, at least fifty, and more than one account of a troll.
As for the goblins, Dorin said he agreed with the guard commander, the goblins were acting unusually, something was stirring them up. He said he would have a word with Commander Albridge about a scouting expedition, maybe something they could consider for tomorrow.
Dorin later reported that Commander Albridge has already sent out scouts. He sent the Galli twins (Anke and Amely) to head up past Wistwood to the northern edge of the forest and approach from the north, to try to get an idea of numbers, and what they were up to. Dorin was happy with this as he knew the Galli twins well, they grew up in Wistwood were very stealthy and good trackers.
Abermar’s trip to the temple revealed the grisly details of the murder, Emma Seld prepared the body for the funeral, and said that Jenny’s throat had been cut, the initials ‘J D’ carved into her breast, her belly slit open, and her left ear cut off (the ear was not recovered). Speaking to the priest (Havier Renn) about the possibility of a ghost being responsible, he said the idea was most unlikely. Ghosts are the souls of the dead who can’t pass into the void because they are driven to complete unfinished business they had in life, they do not attack with weapons, nor do they posses people and force them to carry out their will.
Fintan decided to put two of the watch onto the investigation, asking Gem and Tabbatt to speak to the other women who had reported being chased in the fog.
Shallyn spent his afternoon with the stray animals in the harbour, he befriended a mut called Ralph, and asked the dog to keep an eye out for anything strange.
That night we decide to patrol the harbour area, and are attacked by zombies, they were accompanied by a fog which faded as the fight progressed. Other than it being present at all it seemed like a normal fog, quite different from the acrid fog described the night of the murder.
The zombies were of sailors who had been drowned in the sea over the years (judging from the various ages of the coins we found on them – 16gp in total). We took the bodies to the Temple of the Seventh Wave on the Undercliffe, and Jez founder (acolyte of Telin) said he would ensure that the proper rites were conducted and that they could be put finally to rest.
It being late, most of us decide to turn in for the night, Shallyn however drops into the Jalen Tavern, to talk for a while and make himself known. He also told the tale of the zombie attack emphasising Tom’s roll. Most of them thought he was telling a tall tale, but no doubt when the news spreads tomorrow morning they will think differently.
Dorin spend some hours on the northern wall, and spots a few goblins trying to see what the guards are doing, Commander Albridge has instructed them to vary their patrols and not to fall into a regular pattern.
